Karl D. Umrath Hall began its life as a men’s dormitory known as Tower Hall. It was one of several buildings financed by rental income from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition.

Our client came to us wanting a clean, easy to use, student workspace and lounge The room is small and needs to accommodate several different functions. There also needs to be a degree of toughness and durability for substantial student use.

We used tall bookshelves to divide the space and separate functions. On one side of the bookcase is a seating area with a coffee table and laptop tables for casual meetings or collaboration. On the other side, are eight student workstations for focusing on specific individual projects. We also provided a standing height meeting table for additional collaboration and potential for screen sharing. Finally, we added some lounge seating for gathering around the TV for some downtime.
